2018 - ongoing

We have helped raise significant political support across the UK for action for the less survivable cancers – cancers of the lungs, pancreas, brain, oesophagus, stomach and liver.

IMPACT

  • Significantly raised the profile and voice of the less survivable cancers, e.g. Taskforce representatives have been invited to give oral evidence to the Health and Social Care Select Committee twice; were part of the Cancer Covid Recovery Taskforce; and have regular meetings with senior NHS England and Scottish Government cancer policy leads
  • Created and launched the first ever Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Day in 2022, which was supported by 115 cross-party and cross nation politicians each year and achieved national media coverage – this is now an annual awareness day.
  • Secured the less survivable cancers as a strategic priority area in the 10-year Cancer Strategy for Scotland, 2023-33.
  • Achieved a recommendation by the Health and Social Care Committee for an Action Plan on the Less Survivable Cancers.
  • Created and supported an Advocates Network in Scotland of people directly affected by one of the less survivable cancers.  The Network has regular meetings with the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care and inputs to policy and advocacy in Scotland.
  • Helped build support for significant policy developments for the 6 less survivable cancers, e.g. the roll-out of targeted lung cancer screening, development of rapid diagnostic centres and fibroscans in community centres.

Working with Principle has allowed us to have huge success in raising the profile of the less survivable cancers with Governments and cancer policy teams in England and Scotland. The secretariat support that Principle provides to the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce is excellent, and they are incredibly responsive and willing to adapt and change plans so that we can seize current opportunities. They are the best agency I’ve worked with for policy and public affairs support.”

Anna Jewell, Chair, LSCT
