As an award-winning not-for-profit dedicated to helping charities and socially-driven organisations achieve change through policy, public affairs and campaigns, Principle Consulting is proud to celebrate social enterprise in the UK and the difference it makes.

Social enterprises are businesses that work to achieve positive social or environmental impact. They are primarily motivated, designed and driven by a desire to make a positive difference in the world. Like all businesses social enterprises seek to deliver profit by trading in goods or services, but they reinvest or donate at least half of those profits to their social or environmental mission.

Social Enterprise Day takes place on Thursday 17th November 2022 and is a global event celebrating the incredible contribution that social enterprises make to communities and the environment across the world.

Founded in 2015, Principle Consulting work towards a more just society by helping charities develop clear, impactful policy solutions and ensure that their voices are heard in central, devolved and local government. We have a proven track record of successful policy change campaigns for charities, bringing fresh thinking and a different perspective to all our projects.

Operating as a social enterprise means any profits we generate are reinvested in the organisation and fund our widening access programmes:

  • Our annual widening access internship – through which we aim to help people get started on their career working in charity sector policy, public affairs, and campaigns. This is an opportunity to gain paid experience that is not incumbent on having previous experience or a specific set of qualifications.
  • Offer of pro-bono strategy and training sessions for up to four small charities a year.
  • Our annual work experience programme for people learning English as an additional language.

Jane Cox and Becky Hug, directors at Principle Consulting, said: “At Principle, we are proud to be part of the UK social enterprise movement and to be in our seventeenth year of operation. Last year we won Consultancy of the Year at the Better Society Awards, and we’re delighted to have been shortlisted for the Consultancy of the Year award at the upcoming PRCA-PoliMonitor Public Affairs Awards.

“In 2021-22, we have grown our team from six to eight members. We are achieving significant successes for 14 charities and coalitions, plan to support even more charities as the cost of living crisis deepens and, crucially, growing our team also strengthens our position to continue investing our profits in our widening access schemes.”

Principle Consulting is a member of Social Enterprise UK (SEUK), the UK’s leading membership body for social enterprises. It leads the world’s largest network of businesses with a social or environmental purpose which together are helping to create a fairer economy and a more sustainable future for everyone.

Peter Holbrook, Chief Executive of Social Enterprise UK, said: “Social Enterprise Day is a celebration of the great work social enterprises up and down the country are doing for the environment and communities.

“Where we spend our money can make change happen, and with social enterprises, you can be sure that your purchase will make a real difference.”

There are more than 100,000 social enterprises in the UK contributing an estimated £60bn annually to the economy and employing around two million people.
