The campaign was a remarkable, and in many ways, unexpected success, achieving a concession from the Home Office at a time where its rhetoric and decisions were rarely considered pro-migrant.

We provided strategic advice and support for their parliamentary engagement. This included identifying target MPs with influence with the Government, developing messaging that would appeal to this audience and providing continuous advice and guidance over the course of the campaign.

IMPACT

As a result of this support, We Belong were able to secure the backing of influential backbench Conservative MPs and the Home Affairs Select Committee. This, in turn, led to them securing a meeting with the Immigration Minister.

This engagement led to success for We Belong in achieving their aim of halving the route to settlement for young migrants who have lived in the UK for half of their lives or more, meaning it now takes five years rather than ten and costs thousands of pounds less.

“As a result of receiving ongoing support from Principle, we’ve had huge successes in our advocacy work. In the past year our parliamentary profile has increased a vast amount, Principle helped us to secure a meeting with the immigration minister as well as put our agenda in front of the Home Affairs Select Committee. The alliances that Principle helped us create has enabled us to make sure our young people’s voices and asks are considered by policymakers.

We would unreservedly recommend the work of Principle. They have also provided our young changemakers with hands-on training that gave them more confidence in their ability to campaign and deliver tangible results. The flexibility of using a consultant was much appreciated during an unpredictable time such as Covid. Without Principle’s help we wouldn’t have been able to keep up the momentum for our asks and it felt like they were part of the team from day one.”

We Belong is a youth-led organisation, campaigning for the rights of young migrants. We worked with them on their campaign to halve the route to settlement for young migrants who had come to the UK as children but faced a long and expensive path to attaining permanent status.
