We know from our expertise in this area, that children need support and investment from the government and policymakers more than ever. 1 in 6 children aged 5 to 16 is struggling with a probable mental health problem, and there were 4.2 million children living in poverty in the year 2021-2022. The cost of living crisis, and the coronavirus pandemic, have made addressing children’s needs, and pushing for more effective support, even more crucial.
Although the landscape can be challenging, there are some real opportunities to drive change in the areas that matter for children and young people, and we are proud to be a part of this. Recent policy has seen the government’s health and social care direction, as well as Labour’s five missions for its election manifesto, develop a significant focus on prevention and early intervention. We know that childhood and early years are key for what happens next – and it’s great to see the major parties acknowledging this.
There’s now a unique chance for children’s charities to share their knowledge on what works to give children facing unprecedented challenges the support which they need, and to support children as they grow and move into adulthood.
For example, it has been brilliant to work closely with nurtureuk, supporting them to share the significant impact of the Inclusive and Nurturing Schools programme, which they run jointly with Tender as part of the Mayor of London’s Violence Reduction Unit. Nurtureuk’s work on this programme focuses on addressing the unmet social, emotional and mental health needs of children when they need it, often before those needs have become apparent – this early intervention means that children can receive the inclusion support they need, to reduce their risk of involvement with serious violence.
It’s fantastic to get to use our expertise in policy, public affairs and campaigning to support children’s charities at this moment, especially ahead of an election, where there will be further opportunities to make a real difference to the lives of children in the UK.
